POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor


SALARY: 29,046 – 31,993RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 35,588RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in the post)

CONTRACT TYPE: Full-time, 3-year contract (renewable) and the 3rd contract is open-ended.


Located in Suzhou, China, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a young, dynamic and EMI university founded in 2006, and is a unique collaborative institution and first joint-venture university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees for 103 programmes. XJTLU also aims to become truly research-led and has committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of master’s and PhD student numbers on campus. The university has over 18,000 students and more than 920 academic staff representing in excess of 90 nationalities.

XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). Suzhou has been ranked the 74th most liveable city in the 2018 Global Liveability Index. Situated within the Yangtze River Delta region and near to Shanghai, it is well-connected to other major cities in China via high-speed rail, and globally via nearby airports. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, and the SIP has a higher GDP per capita than the UK. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M. Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there is a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools. 

The Department of Pure Mathematics invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor. Our international department has 15 academic staff actively engaged in research in algebra, combinatorics, dynamical systems, geometry, number theory and topology. We seek individuals with a PhD in Mathematics who will make a strong contribution to the research output of the department.

Successful candidates will show commitment to a high standard of teaching at all levels. The department is involved in the delivery of three four-year undergraduate mathematics programmes as well as the provision of service teaching for other programmes within the university. At the postgraduate level, we offer a PhD programme in Mathematical Sciences.


  • Conduct high-quality research, leading to publications in respected international mathematics journals.
  • Actively pursue external research funding.
  • Supervise PhD students and undergraduate student projects.
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in English.
  • Contribute to the functioning of the department and school.


We are seeking future colleagues who are passionate about mathematics and have an active attitude towards research, are able to collaborate effectively with others and to conduct their academic duties in English.


  • A PhD in Mathematics.
  • Ideally two years of full-time postdoctoral experience with demonstrable teaching experience.
  • International experience in higher education.


  • Experience in conducting research supported by national-level research funds.
  • Experience in academic programme design and development.
  • Experience in supervision of student projects.


Members of Academic Staff are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, and children’s education, medical insurance, and a one-time relocation allowance is provided. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday,” depending on nationality and personal circumstances.


Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government.
